Blog entry for 2020.02.19 - Research part II

Quick update on my health: The recovery is going great! I feel much better and the pain in my arm is almost gone.
I do kind of regret signing up for this...
It is worth it, for the sake of research. They still don't know about this site, so I'm safe for now.
Might have to make a login system later. I shouldn't risk this now when I'm almost ready to go public.
I do have some entries that I don't share with everyone, but they don't have much data to go by in case these somehow disappear.

So today I continued my research on the ongoing pandemic
Update on the sample from last time: the device stopped working halfway through the tests, but I managed to get some data at least. Good thing it was just a disposable laptop from the junkyard. Very lucky find now that I think of it.
Turns out it doesn't contain any known trojans or worms. Don't know about anything else though.
I've also noticed that the samples can differ quite a bit in structure and purpose. Some of them are just the regular "strain", while some seem almost like...mutations
That can't be possible, I've probably confused my samples again. Maybe the guys behind this just made more versions? If so, then why are some of them worse than the original?

I also thought that it would be nice to document the most common characteristics of the virus.

Ways to catch it:

  • Using an infected USB device
  • Being connected to an infected network for too long
  • and probably more

Order of "symptoms":

  • Corners of screen start dying
  • Data slowly starts getting corrupted
  • Device connects itself to the virus botnet and starts communicating
  • Device bootloops

Criteria for device to be able to get infected:

  • Has IC chips
  • Capable of connecting to internet (?)
  • and hopefully more

Where could this even be coming from? It could just be a normal virus, but I doubt it.
Might be a terrorist attack, or some anarchist group trying to cause chaos.
How the hell does someone even make something like this? Especially distributing it so far, must be a large collective.
No one could do this alone.
It'll all be over soon though.

For those who have lost devices to the virus:
The government of your city or at least some other nearby city probably offers "safe" electronics. The UN got off their lazy asses and made them do it. If you don't live somewhere where this is an option, I'd suggest leaving the country ASAP. God knows how much worse it could get.
You can use those, or ones from the junkyard. It's your choice really.
Not much of a difference, either. The government ones aren't that good, as you would probably expect. Their excuse is that they've already spent a lot of money on damage control and don't plan to spend more on this (greedy bastards)

My data keeps getting corrupted. All of my logs from last year are just mojibake now. The online copies are fine though.
I hope someone can read this.
What's worse, none of it is because of the virus. My equipment is outdated and unmaintenanced, and I have no way of fixing it.
All I have for storage are a few old HDDs, USB drives and SD cards (luckily my laptop has a reader for those).
If you want field footage, record it yourself. I don't plan on going out with my shitty camera just to get some recording of the same shit you've been able to see out your windows for so long now.
After all, I don't have a spare.

Here's some news footage snippets that I found interesting. Look how they portray all this. Like looking through black-tinted glasses. I don't think anyone who's still rational would fall for this shit.
It shouldn't be that hard to make a functional antivirus, why do they make it out to be so difficult? Don't they want all of this to end?

See ya next time. Hope I'll have more to share by then.
